SIG, which operates one of the largest 26-tonne truck fleets in the UK, has just taken delivery of its thirtieth Iveco Stralis 6x2 rigid. The Euro 4 truck has been specified with a steering rear axle, a feature that the company made a standard specification about 18 months ago. "We make a lot of deliveries to construction sites in city centres," says fleet administrator Leo Ashworth. "Access is often very restrictive and the steering axle really aids manoeuvrability."
Automatic transmissions have also become standard spec in recent years, and according to fleet manager Bob Ganley, prove particularly valuable in urban areas. He explains that two-pedal transmissions are not only a big hit with the drivers, but give improved clutch life. As a result the latest Iveco will be based in Greater London. Although the latest truck is a Euro 4, all future purchases will be Euro 5 equipped. The decision to adopt the cleanest technology more than two years before it becomes mandatory is in accordance with the company's commitment to run as eco-friendly a fleet as possible.
It should also prove advantageous in London, following the announcement of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Ganley explains that Greater London represents a large market for its insulation, roofing and commercial interior supplies. The latest Stralis, which has a 26ft curtainsider body, is fitted with a new Moffett Mounty M5. This truck-mounted forklift truck was launched at this year's CV Show, and is unique in the sense that it has an extended reach - giving it the ability to load and unload a vehicle from the same side.
The Iveco will remain on the fleet for between six and seven years, during which time it is expected to cover over 500,000kms.
