Although the trial of longer, heavier vehicles (LHVs) in the Netherlands has so far gone well, word has it that the maximum weight of LHVs will be limited to 50 tonnes. This is the weight limit in the Netherlands for regular heavy trucks, while LHVs are currently allowed to weigh 60 tonnes. Recently, a bridge between Amsterdam and Almere was damaged, although it is not yet known whether LGVs were the cause. Investigations are taking place but results are expected no sooner than next year.
Sources around the Dutch government in The Hague indicate that a weight limit for LHVs is being considered and it is possible that this damaged bridge will affect the decision made. The Dutch also intend to shorten their LHVs. The current maximum length is 25.25m, although this looks to be cut to 21.42m. The Dutch road haulage association, TLN, is pushing for a length of 21.80m to allow a combination of 13.60m trailer and 8.0m loading box.
At present, Dutch LHVs are only allowed on limited routes, although it looks like they will soon be allowed to use a wider variety of motorways. The Minister of Traffic and Waterways is expected to make a decision two weeks from now.
