Daf says 66% of old trucks comply with LEZ

21 June 2007

Daf says it took four days to sift through records to establish how many Euro 1 and 2 engined-trucks reach Euro 3 levels for particulate emissions. The manufacturer says it is difficult to quote accurate figures, but a spokesman estimates that between one half to two-thirds of its vehicles made between 1996 and 2001 will meet the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) minimum requirement despite them not being Euro 3 vehicles.

TfL has defended the revelation that an unknown quantity of Euro  1 and 2 engines already meet the LEZ requirement, claiming it is focusing only on particulate emissions because they are most harmful for human health, (MT, June 14).

But FTA regional policy manager Gordon Telling claims TfL ignored NOx levels when it realised how costly it would be to retrofit buses with NOx filters: "It's very, very disingenuous to say it is concentrating on particulates because they are the most important." Daf says it has not been officially approached by TfL, despite the launch of the scheme in just seven months.
