Hythe, Kent-based Laser Transport International reported turnaround pre-tax profits in 2006 of £465,762. Despite highlighting tough trading conditions, Laser Transport managed tot turn a £328,938 loss in 2005 into profit in the year to 31 December 2006. Turnover rose from £14.8m in 2005 to £15.3m.
In a statement the company said the UK government's inflexible stance in implementing EU legislation, particularly when compared to EU counterparts, put UK operators at a huge disadvantage when compared to their European competitors. "This means there is an ever present risk of price undercutting by European competitors not burdened with the same operating costs as in the UK."
However the company did highlight the fact that it had achieved sustained growth in its core European groupage, distribution and logistics business and strong performance from its worldwide projects and freight forwarding divisions.
The company plans to bolster this performance with the development of new markets, the expansion of its worldwide partner network and investment in new vehicles, equipment and IT.
