The decision to extend kerbside loading and unloading times for delivery lorries in London could become a blueprint for the rest of the country, says the Freight Transport Association (FTA). Gordon Telling, head of policy for London, the South-east and East of England, says the move by London's 32 boroughs to allow deliveries for up to 40 minutes instead of 20, could be a model for other cities.
Westminster City Council has already announced a pilot scheme, to start in July, which will allow 40 minute kerbside deliveries after 11am. But the trial will apply only to larger delivery vehicles that have longer time needs, not vans. Telling says: "If the new system works well in London then local authorities around the country can say that's the way things can be done."
