RHA slams Manchester congestion charge plans

09 July 2007

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has condemned the inclusion of trucks in Manchester's proposed congestion charging scheme. Local haulage firms predict their business could be hit. Global Logistics MD Paul Welsh says: "There is a good chance we could move from our current location if these plans go ahead."

The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities proposes an "illustrative" charge of up to £5 a day for cars using the busiest roads at peak times. It proposes that trucks would  attract higher fees, but the RHA points out that no figure is given.

RHA northern regional director Geoff Dunning says: "The AGMA report makes very little mention of the many significant issues that relate specifically to freight."
