B James Skip Hire's licence cut appeal lost

09 July 2007

B James Skip Hire (Cardiff) has lost an appeal against a cut in its licence authorisation from 20 vehicles to eight after vehicle maintenance problems.

The Transport Tribunal said it was satisfied the decision of former Welsh traffic commissioner David Dixon was a cautious and balanced approach to a difficult situation. It added that the steps the company had taken to improve vehicle maintenance as at the date of the inquiry were "commendable", but it was too soon to state if a sustained  improvement was to be achieved.

Dixon was told a maintenance investigation found faults including oil leaks, faulty brakes, a loose wheelnut, defective tyres and defective suspension. There were gaps of up to 19 weeks in the safety inspection records and no record of repairs. The company had been issued two immediate and two delayed prohibitions after ten roadside checks.
