High regrooving rate cuts Nuttall tyre costs

18 July 2007

Rochdale-based James Nuttall (Transport) claims to have recorded one of the highest tyre regrooving rates of any UK haulier, with consequent reductions in tyre remoulding and replacement bills. Fleet engineer Michael Coale says that, over the past 18 months, it has been possible for Nuttall to regroove 77% of all its worn tyres in its own workshop, prior to sending them - many thousands of kilometres later - to Michelin for remoulding.

According to Michelin, Nuttall's regrooving rate is  nearly double the national average and it has enabled the company to prolong the life of each new tyre by around 25%. Each steer axle tyre takes about 10 minutes to regroove, or 15 to 20 minutes for an average drive axle tyre. Coates says Nuttall tries, where tyres are otherwise undamaged, to follow a 'four lives' tyre policy - regrooving, subsequently remoulding, and eventually regrooving and later remoulding a second time.
