28 days for digitach data downloads

18 July 2007

The Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing a maximum downloading time on digital tachograph driver cards of 28 days. The proposed regulation, based on the department's review of responses to a consultation document on downloading data, rules that it is the operator's or driver's responsibility to ensure data  is not overwritten.

Operators who run multi-drop deliveries may need to download data more frequently as driver cards could be filled before the 28-day maximum. The Road Haulage Association fully supported the longer maximum period for downloading data from driver cards.

The Freight Transport Association also supported the option proposed by the DfT, but offered an alternative of making operators responsible for deciding download frequency in the case of those that already had effective management systems. Downloading data from vehicle units will be required every 56 days under the proposed regulations.
