T&P awaits licence checks

18 July 2007

Tachograph checks by VOSA will determine whether T&P Logistics will retain its licence. The Wednesbury, West Midlands, haulier was brought to public inquiry for the second time in two years for drivers' hours and tachograph offences. It was fined £16,040 in March for a series of problems and had its licence curtailed in August 2005 from 16 to 10 vehicles.

Traffic examiner Sara Jones said there was no evidence of improvement. After the last inquiry a further analysis of tachograph charts  revealed missing kilometres, and offences over a two-month period. Drivers had been paid bonuses despite committing offences. Director Peter Ward said T&P changed its tachograph analysis agency in 2005. After four months charts were slow coming back. Offences were not brought to its attention and T&P parted company with the analyst in 2006.

Drivers were never knowingly paid bonuses for illegal work. It was heard T&P was compliant, well run and would welcome a VOSA inspection. West Midlands traffic commissioner Nick Jones adjourned the hearing until October, saying there was a lengthy period since the last VOSA check and he needed to consider the current position.
