Asda is offering to recycle its old in-cab technology to hauliers after switching to Isotrak. The supermarket chain is pulling out 900 Vemis units and would "really like to meet with operators who are keen to take it - we're not going to sell it," says Simon Pearson, Asda's head of central distribution operations.
Pearson anticipates a "step-up in fuel efficiency" with Asda's new technology and the arrival of new Euro-4 vehicles towards the end of the year, and says Asda's target is to reach a 5% increase by 2010. The Isotrak hardware is being fitted into Asda's entire LGV fleet during the summer.
Pearson says truck security and driver safety were key in the choice. "It makes everyone's lives easier - we're really stepping on our ability to talk to our drivers, and we're mindful of the legislative changes with regards to mobile phones.
"There's also a panic system that connects straight to the traffic office," he says, adding that Isotrak can also be fitted into trailers so they can be tracked separately.
