The owner of a Cambridgeshire-based soft fruit packaging company says he is confident he will be granted permission to expand his business this week, despite objections over truck noise. Peter Grice, owner of PG Packaging, has applied to erect a 1,400m2 storage building on the site of his packaging business in Whittlesey. It currently employs 16 people but if the expansion gets the go-ahead, this will increase  to 37.

However, at least one local resident has complained that the noise and disturbance from trucks in the night is already a problem, and a local authority says it has concerns over surface water drainage. But Grice says that if another site he owns in Arbroath also gets planning permission it will remove lorries from the Cambridgeshire site. His agent estimates that 40 fewer vehicles will leave the latter site during the summer.

Grice says: "Most of the trucks that come here are contractors. There would be a decrease in contractors because I'm expanding in Scotland." A decision was due to be made by Fenland District Council on 25 July.
