Aberdeen haulier ARR Craib says it is "really pushing" its rail link joint venture with WH Malcolm. Managing director Eddie Anderson says he anticipates investment into the project "in the next 12 months". The venture is currently running 55 trains a week through the link between Grangemouth and Aberdeen. "Quite a few customers are paying attention [to rail]. We do see it as growing," he adds. He says a new rail terminal is being built in Aberdeen, owned by Direct Rail Services, and "we hope to be involved".
Pre-tax profit for ARR Craib grew more than one-third in the year to March 2007, to £771,257 from £574,198 in 2006. Turnover growth was marginal, to £33.2m in 2007 from £33.1m the previous year. Anderson says the company is "more interested in profit", than the "vanity" of turnover growth. He adds that the company is getting firmer with customers and "dropping off some business which is not profitable", adding that some work was actually losing the company money.
ARR Craib has taken delivery of around 35 Euro-4 and Euro-5 vehicles in the past few months. Anderson says it is trialling both EGR and SCR - adding that EGR seems easier to operate in the early stages, but no firm conclusions have been drawn.
