Stephen Bowles has resigned as chairman of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) effective immediately. Bowles’ predecessor Willie Oliver will resume the role until the next round of elections in around 10 months time. Bowles, who was elected last month, is said to have stepped down after his application to be a director of his family's firm Roy Bowles Transport was rejected.
RHA chief executive Roger King says: “Steve thought his position was difficult if he couldn’t be a director of his own firm.” King confirms that it was Bowles’ decision to resign. He consulted officers of the association before tendering his resignation at a board meeting yesterday. “Obviously we’re very distressed and saddened for Steve,” King says.
