DfT gives £20m grant to boost rail freight

30 July 2007

The Department for Transport (DfT) has provided more than £20m in funding to improve rail freight in the UK. The Transport Improvement Scheme will provide £18.5m to enhance the Gospel Oak to Barking line in London to enable the transport of more goods from ports in the South-East.

A further £2.1m has been awarded to five freight infrastructure projects through the Freight Facilities Grant scheme. This money will  be used to upgrade facilities at Tolworth goods yard, Brierly Hill, Southampton Docks, Barry Docks and the Port of Heysham.

The DfT says that collectively the projects will remove 39 million lorry km from the roads over the next 10 years.
