MoreThanBusiness is urging van operators to check their vehicles more regularly, after it released figures showing that businesses across the UK are losing £150m every year due to breakdowns. Figures show that more than 1.3 million vans and commercial vehicles per year require breakdown assistance, resulting in an average earning loss of £114 per hour.
The survey notes that this finding is not all bad, as it determines that the most common causes of commercial vehicle breakdown can easily be avoided. At the top of the breakdown list is battery problems, followed by punctured tyres and overheating engines.
Mike Bowman, head of MoreThan Business, says: "A great deal of money could be saved by making simple, routine checks to the vehicle as well as ensuring that motorists are aware of basic vehicle maintenance, such as how to change a wheel or check coolant levels." The top 10 causes of breakdown also include driver errors that could easily be avoided, such as leaving the lights on and draining the battery as well as drivers locking themselves out of their vehicles. Most alarmingly, vehicles being filled up with the wrong type of fuel was in sixth place.
