Cox Skips buys two Mercedes Actros

06 August 2007

Cox Skips has purchased a pair of specially adapted Mercedes 6x4 tractor units. Both are Actros 3351S models with 510hp SCR Euro-4 engines, built for Special Types haulage work at up to 120 tonnes GVW. The Crawley, West Sussex-based company has had them downrated for operation at 44 tonnes.

Supplied by local dealer Rossetts Commercials, the Actros have Long Distance cabs and uprated suspension systems and axles, providing a ride height increased by 5in (12.7cm). They also have Eminox vertical exhausts. Dave Cartlidge, transport and fleet manager for Cox Skips, says: "These trucks are going to a landfill site 35 miles away at Redhill. They will have a really arduous life on the tip, where the operating environment is constantly changing.

"We were experiencing high operating costs with our previous vehicles. So we decided to tailor these new trucks to the job in the hope they would give us five years' service at minimal expense."  He adds that the firm has not operated Mercedes tractors before. "It came down to the overall package. We looked at the purchase price, the warranty, and the financial implications of the alterations we wanted to make - and the Mercedes came out best."
