Data collected by two hauliers which ran digital and analogue tachographs simultaneously for a month is being analysed by VOSA to see whether the two devices record time differently.

In May, VOSA and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) launched a trial with AJA Smith Transport of Clitheroe, Lancs, and Ray Stewart Haulage of Warrington, Cheshire, to investigate claims that  digitachs over-record hours by rounding up to the nearest minute.

Jack Semple, director of policy at the RHA, says VOSA is currently looking at a month's figures collected by both hauliers. "We've asked the hauliers not to collect any more data for us while this data is analysed, but to keep both types of tacho in the vehicles in case we want them to do a further trial period."

While unable to give any indication as to the data that had been collected, Semple says it is "interesting and useful" and the results will be made available as soon as possible.
