Eddie Stobart says up to 150 driving jobs will be created when it starts delivering into Tesco's new distribution centre in Goole, East Yorks. The 74,000m2 site is due to open in September and is expected to use a biomass energy system. Thousands of tonnes of straw will be used to fire a generator at the £65m distribution centre.
Stobart group chairman Andrew Tinkler tells CM around 65 trucks will start delivering to the site, located off Junction 36 of the M62. "Tesco is operating the distribution centre itself, but it will probably create about 100 to 150 jobs," he adds. Eddie Stobart is also considering the possibility of incorporating rail freight at the site.
"We are in talks with Tesco and other customers on new rail freight routes," says Tinkler, "but that's all it is at the moment. There might be trains from Goole eventually." No one from Tesco was available for comment as CM went to press.
