Skills for Logistics (SfL) is warning employers not to be "lulled into a false sense of security by benign recruitment conditions". SfL's latest survey of 1,205 LGV driver employers - employing more than 17,000 drivers - finds that one driver in six is aged 55 or over, and 3.4% are from overseas, mainly from 2004 EU accession states.
Those surveyed said recruitment was not a serious concern in 2006, and just 30% of depots recruited drivers during the year. But head of policy Graham Morton says recruitment could be a problem for the future with a lot of drivers coming to retirement age, the number of overseas workers and the 2009 introduction of the driver CPC.
