When in Romania? UK experts offer truck advice

16 August 2007

A team of UK road transport experts has visited Romania to give advice on lorry operating standards. VOSA officials, along with representatives from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and Road Haulage Association (RHA) spoke with the Romanian government, as well as various trade associations last month.

FTA representatives provided sample compliance guides for operators and driver handbooks for translation into Romanian. RHA staff gave a presentation on modern trade association  practice, particularly relating to services and advice. The visit was part of VOSA's EU-funded twinning project with Romania, designed to ensure it correctly applies European road transport law. Romania joined the EU on January 1 this year.

Neil barlow, head of traffic enforcement policy at VOSA and project leader for the work in Romani, says: "This twinning project is focused on improving the standard of vehicle operation in Romania, and this particular piece of work has given us the opportunity to get the Romanian authorities and trade to work together to improve safety in the industry."
