Felixstowe Port was forced to close again last week after high winds battered the docks. Police initiated Operation Stack on one lane of the A14 near the Dockspur Roundabout, ordering more than 100 LGVs to queue until the winds died down.
A spokesman for the port reports that closure lasted from the afternoon of 15 August until the early evening. He says Operation Stack appears to have eased congestion: "When there are problems it tends to be because it clogs other roads, inconveniencing other people. On this occasion we are not aware of any significant disruption."
It is unusual for high winds to close the port during August, he adds: "We wouldn't say it would never happen, but normally our windiest months tend to be winter months, January and February. This year there have been more stoppages than usual, but it's not a record 2002 was worse."
