SMMT figures show CV sales are on the up

24 August 2007

UK commercial vehicle production in July was 8.7% lower than last year at 13,985 vehicles, but for the year to date production is up 2.1% to 123,935 vehicles. Of the CVs produced in July, 61.5% were for export.

According to Christopher Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), distortions in sales figures last year due to hauliers rushing to buy Euro-3 trucks before Euro-4 legislation came into force  seem to have settled.

"We're at last seeing signs of growth in large commercial vehicle production in the UK," he says. But when all CVs are taken into account the modest rise in volumes for the year so far "should result in an annual total of some 215,000" if the growth is sustained, Macgowan says.
