A prominent haulier says the proposed rise in fuel duty will make it even more diff-icult for UK haulage firms to compete with their foreign counterparts.
Anne Preston, managing director of Prestons of Potto, says government plans to increase fuel duty by 2p/litre from October 2007 could hit UK operators hard.
Preston adds: "Our customers have had to take a hard hit already and many of them are finding it difficult to compete in world markets. "Nothing annoys me more than the unfair competition with foreign vehicles and the low fuel duty they pay - this increase will widen the margin ever more."
