The founder of Kögel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH, Franz Xaver Kögel, has died at the age of 97. In 1934 Kögel, a qualified master coach builder, took over the Ulm-based coach building business belonging to his master and trainer. By the early 1950s his company was manufacturing parts for Magirus-Deutz, carrying out body work for Opel and producing truck cabs for Krupp.
Over the years the company increasingly concentrated on manufacturing trailers. It went public in the 1990s and acquired axle and trailer production facilities from Kässbohrer. Franz Xaver Kögel was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande) in 1998.
