Renault and VW unveil van-based passenger cars

12 September 2007

This week's Frankfurt Motor Show sees the unveiling of passenger cars from Renault and Volkswagen, giving strong clues as to the van products the two manufacturers are  expected to launch at Amsterdam next month.

The all-new Renault Kangoo begins its launch at Frankfurt in MPV format, which is responsible for 50% of all Kangoo sales. Now built on the Scenic platform (the old Kangoo was built on Clio), the Kangoo has a wider wheel track, improving cargo space and handling.

The range is much more diverse than previously with the promise of more wheelbase and body size options. All engines are carried over from the previous range with 68, 86 and 105hp diesel lumps available. The interior is given a thorough makeover, with the gearshift now mounted on the dash, following the industry norm.

The Volkswagen Caddy Life is the passenger version of the Caddy van, not widely seen in the UK. The newcomer is a lengthened version, the Caddy Life Maxi. Some 150mm of the increase comes from rear overhang,  with another 320mm from the wheelbase. The other Caddy news is that the current model will be available this autumn with the 140 TDI engine, delivering 138hp and 320Nm.
