The Scottish government has promised to make a decision on the new Forth road crossing before the end of the year. Stewart Stevenson, Scottish transport minister, made the pledge in a meeting with Gavin Scott, Freight Transport Association (FTA) head of policy for Scotland, last week.
The Scottish Executive is currently considering various options, including a replacement bridge, a tunnel, or refurbishment of the existing crossing. Scott says: "We believe the decision must be for a new bridge. Our feeling is that a tunnel is not suitable for the logistics industry, especially for trucks carrying hazardous goods."
MSPs are presently working on a bill to abolish the tolls on the Tay and Forth bridges.
