The rail freight lobby in the European Parliament has suffered a defeat after its attempt to get Longer Heavier Vehicles (LHVs) banned from EU roads came off the tracks.
Instead, MEPS voted by a massive 11-to-1 majority to recommend to the European Commission (EC) that member states should be able to decide whether they are allowed within their own borders, but to give the EC ultimate veto on routes.
However, this differs little from the current status quo and is unlikely to ever make it into law. The EC will shortly appoint a consultant to study the subject area before making any final ruling on the matter.
