JD Owen looks to Brussels for support

19 September 2007

The owner of Mold, Clwyd-based haulier JD Owen is in talks with transport officials in Brussels and hopes to gain European backing for his proposed truckstop at J31 on the A55.

Dai Owen submitted plans for the truckstop and office unit complex to Flintshire County Council two months ago after 18 months of preparation he pushed ahead with  the plan after one of his drivers was attacked while parked up in a layby.

While the plan has been met with local opposition, Owen hopes support from Brussels, together with backing from the local Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of British Industry and the United Road Transport Union as well as the Road Haulage Association, will show local planners how important a truckstop is to the area.

"A truckstop is much needed on the A55. I have spoken to drivers parked up in laybys in the area and they are all for the provision of secure parking and facilities for drivers in the area," Owen says.
