RD Anderson granted operating centre move

21 September 2007

Scottish traffic commissioner Joan Aitken has authorised RD Anderson Haulage to move its operating centre, and increase the number of vehicles authorised on its licence by 10 to 60, but has done so "with some hesitation".

Aitken made the grant subject to a series of environmental conditions and undertakings in relation to both the Anderson licence and that held by associated firm Caledonian Industrial, trading as Caleco Waste. She also directed that there be no increase in vehicle authority  for 18 months.

RD Anderson had sought to move its operating centre to Veitch Brothers in Edgefield Road, Loanhead, Midlothian from its existing Edinburgh site, with the idea of amalgamating the site with adjacent premises owned by Caleco. But neighbouring residents complained about the volume of heavy vehicles and congestion, and noise, dirt and pollution.

RD Anderson managing director Michael Owens said there had been no complaints at its existing site. It would pledge not to use Edgefield Road other than when going to customers at the Edgefield Industrial Estate and one of the firm's first tasks would be to improve the access road.

Elizabeth Veitch, a director of Veitch Brothers, said it had been in business at the site for 28 years. She had received no complaints about operations or noise, dirt and pollution. If the application was granted her company's licence would be surrendered.
