The UK, France, Italy and Spain are all shouting for MAN's Euro 5 EGR option, according to MAN's director of engineering and purchasing, Karl-Viktor Schaller, whereas the German market is happy with its Euro 5 SCR engine.
Commenting on its home market, where 70% of all MANs sold are Euro 5, Schaller says: "They all understand AdBlue. They know how to handle it. It is not a big issue for them." MAN says it can supply UK hauliers with Euro 5 SCR trucks, albeit in left-hand drive form. Those wanting EGR will need to wait longer.
"In 2008, Euro 5 EGR will be launched. It will be on the market by early 2009, and that's a promise," says Schaller. "And Euro 5 EGR will have the same fuel consumption as our current Euro 4 and Euro 5 engines." When asked why it has taken them longer than Scania to produce a Euro 5 EGR engine, he said it was because unlike Scania, they have had to put resources into a new truck.
