Scania Young European Truck Driver Update

21 September 2007

Scania's Young European Truck Driver of the Year 2007 is in full swing in Sodertalje, Sweden - with the UK's entrant William Herron proving to be among the front-runners. Herron, who runs and drives for family firm WJ Herron Transport with his father Billy, has so far scored top marks in the defensive driving (5 out of 5) and obstacle categories (19 out of 19). And after 15 drivers have had a shot, he remains third in fuel economy.

But as Herron is well aware, there is still a long way  to go. After today's final test of cargo securement, Herron and the 26 other finalists from across Europe will undergo another gruelling day of precision manoeuvres tomorrow (Sat, 22 September) to have the chance of winning a brand new Scania artic valued at Euro100,000.

Herron says the contest can only help promote the industry to younger drivers. He describes being at the event as "unbelievable - the atmosphere is great and it's totally different to anything." The 2007 event is the third in the biannual competition's history.
