Denby's profits turnaround after continental trading

26 September 2007

Lincolnshire haulier Denby Transport has experienced a turnaround in profit and turnover after a year of trading in a buoyant continental market. Pre-tax profit more than doubled in the year to April 2007, to £288,000 on a turnover of around £9m. Sales were also up almost 4% compared with 2006's figures.

Denby Transport managing director Peter Denby says its success is based on focusing almost exclusively on continental traffic: its main markets are in France, Belgium and Northern Spain,  which it services with a large fleet of double-deckers and flat trailers.

He says: "I think that the international market, in which we are involved, was much stronger volumes were much higher. Our performance is satisfactory. We started international work when the market was born, 35 years ago, when RoRo was introduced. That's probably why we are still here."

Trading figures for the company in 2006 revealed rising fuel costs were affecting Denby's balance sheet however, the haulage company appears to have turned the situation around.

"There's always a time lag for receiving increases in fuel and passing them on in part or full to our customers," explains Denby. "For some contracts that can take six or eight months."
