HL Smith switches to new Mercedes-Benz

28 September 2007

Vehicle parts specialist HL Smith has ended its policy of buying used vans, having just taken delivery of four new 3.5-tonne Mercedes-Benz Sprin-ters and a pair of Vitos. "We have a long history of buying Mercedes, although until recently we'd always preferred low-mileage, second-hand units," says transport manager Vic Wilkins. "But this meant we lost some of the manufacturer's warranty.

"Now, because we are buying new vans, we benefit from the full three-year unlimited mileage cover."  The Sprinters are medium-wheelbase 311CDI chassis cabs, and have been fitted with 11ft alloy dropside bodies, built by Brade-Leigh Bodies of West Bromwich. They are being used to transport specialised parts, such as gearboxes and prop shafts.
