Truck drivers have been accused of taunting toll collectors on the Forth Road Bridge about losing their jobs if tolls are scrapped.
The taunts, which one Scottish newspaper described as "X-rated abuse", have come in the wake of proposals to abolish tolls. If the measure is passed by the Scottish Parliament it is believed that around 40 jobs would be lost at the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA), which operates and maintains the Forth Road Bridge.
A FETA spokesman says its
staff have complained about the abuse: "Since the first announcement of the abolition of tolls, the collectors have faced daily abuse from users. They deserve understanding, not cruel ridicule."
Phil Flanders, the Road Haulage Association's director for Scotland, says: "Of course it is wrong and should not happen, but I've spoken to some of the toll collectors and it's been made clear to me that the abuse has come from car drivers as well. That said, it is wrong whoever it comes from."
