A purpose-built detention lorry to hold illegal immigrants is being trialled in the UK. The Border and Immigration Agency says if its five-month trial at the ferry port in Poole, Dorset is successful, the scheme could be extended.
Up to ten people can be held in the truck for a maximum of 12 hours while their details are checked.
Liam Byrne, immigration minister, says: "Tougher checks at Britain's borders mean on-the-spot lock-ups are now essential." An average of 20 illegal immigrants are caught at Poole each month, many of them hiding on freight trucks.
