P&O Ferrymasters is to add 610 trailers to its fleet before the end of the year as it looks to expand its business. All the trailers will be on a long-term lease from GE. Some will replace existing trailers and other will be additions to the fleet. The company could not confirm which bodybuilders the trailers will be made by.
P&O Ferrymasters will be getting 200 coil carriers, 275 Euroliner trailers, 75 mega trailers and 60 reefer trailers. Commercial director Mark Mulder says all the coil carriers and the Euroliners for carrying high-value goods are additions to the fleet.
"Our company strategy has always been to develop our steel business, hence the coil carriers. With regard to the mesh trailers, that's a change in direction for us and we need them for high security transportation, which we believe is a big growth area". Mulder adds the firm will not be investing in extra tractor units to go with the trailers because "we have a large enough fleet".
