No VED rebate, but Tories promise 40mph review

09 October 2007

If victorious at the next general election, the Conservative Party would carry out a review of the 40mph speed limit on single-carriageway A-roads, introduce lorry road user charging and seek to address the issue of overnight parking for drivers. Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers was speaking at the RHA Lunch this week she said that while the Tories would be unable to offer rebates on VED or fuel duty, a comprehensive review of a number of issues would be unveiled.

"I can guarantee  that foreign trucks will pay their fair share of tax, wherever they come from," she said. "We will look to introduce lorry road user charging. If the Germans can do it, then so can we."

She also outlined how a future Conservative government would seek to tackle congestion hotspots to improve road capacity and did not rule out a future road-building programme. Regarding a planned speed limit change, she said: "It's high time the 40mph speed limit was reviewed. The improvements in the braking and safety of vehicles warrants a review and there is a strong case for raising the speed limit to 50mph."
