A Conservative government would review the 40mph HGV speed limit on single carriageway A-roads - with a view of lifting it to 50mph - according to shadow transport minister Theresa Villiers.
Speaking at the Road Haulage Association (RHA) lunch in London, Villiers said: "We will ensure foreign trucks will pay their fair share of tax, wherever they come from." She added that a Tory government would work to find a solution on lorry road user charging that would support the use of greener trucks. However, she made it clear the Tories would not cut fuel duty or VED.
Chancellor Alistair Darling has committed to spend £14.5bn a year on transport by 2010. The 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review has allocated funding for strategic road network schemes, including widening the M1 and M6, and investment in local and regional roads of £1.3bn. Darling also re-affirmed the government's commitment to local road charging schemes.
