Welsh Assembly asks for hauliers' opinions

12 October 2007

Hauliers in Wales are being asked for their views on the future of freight transport in the principality. The Welsh Assembly Government launched its consultation document - Wales Freight Strategy - at the official opening of the new head office of Owens Road Services in Port Talbot. The Assembly says it aims to develop a strategy to deliver a "modern, efficient freight transport system", create a sustainable freight infrastructure and integrate all modes of transport - "particularly between road  and rail, and links to sea ports".

The strategy outlines the need to "provide parking for road freight transport (locations, facilities required and pricing)" and to consider specific parking for drivers' rest areas.Interested individuals and bodies are being asked to submit their responses by 4 January 2008. Ian Gallagher, Freight Transp-ort Association (FTA) policy manager for Wales, says: "We very much welcome the opportunity for freight operators and the FTA to forge closer ties with the Assembly and with planners across the principality."
