Drivers are being urged not to park up in laybys following a spate of 19 truck hijackings in the past three months. Of these, 14 have occurred in the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.
This campaign trailer, launched by the Association of Chief Police Officers' vehicle crime intelligence service, is available nationwide for police forces to park in roadside laybys to identify truck crime hotspots, says superintendent John Wake. He adds that hijackings account for 5% of overall freight crime.
Wake concedes that secure truck facilities for drivers "are few and far between". The Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association cite this as the main cause of the continued prevalence of truck hijackings.
