Amic Haulage fined £1,500 for overloading

25 October 2007

A Crewe haulage firm has been fined £1,500 plus £148 costs for overloading after a driver failed to put an empty pallet as a barrier at the front of the truck to prevent an axle from being overweight. Driver John Selwell forgot to use the pallet barrier when loading food on the truck for Amic Haulage of Haslington, Solihull Magistrates (West Midlands) heard.

The truck was found to have an axle overloading of 990kg, equal to 13%, at a routine check, said Helen Key, prosecuting for VOSA.  John Dyne, representing Amic, said the truck would not have been overloaded if the driver, who had since left, had used the empty pallet. "Unfortunately, the firm may now have to go before the traffic commissioner. Yet the management believed the truck had been loaded in accordance with company policy," said Dyne.
