Detroit Diesel has launched its DD15 engine, the first manifestation of Daimler's Heavy Duty Engine Platform, which is set to replace the four engine series used globally by Daimler trucks in the Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner and Mitsubishi-Fuso ranges.
The six-cylinder, 14.8-litre unit uses a new amplified common-rail system and turbo compounding technology. Available with power ratings ranging from 455hp to 560hp, it represents five years' work and close to £700m investment. Awaiting launch are 12.8-litre and 15.6-litre variants.
The DD15 uses EGR and a diesel particulate filter to meet the 2007 US Environmental Protection Agency emissions standard, but will meet the 2010 standard via SCR.
