Used van sales remain robust

07 November 2007

The used van market remains healthy, according to Alex Wright, CV sales director at Manheim Auctions, "and looks set to remain strong for the rest of the year". He says the car-derived van sector is in particularly good shape, with SWB Ford Transit Connects selling well and returning good residuals.

The VW Caddy, which is still fairly new to the market, continues to be very popular, and while the SDI model still has a healthy following, demand is currently leaning towards the TDI. Vauxhall  Combos are also proving popular. Buyers have surprised by backing the 1.3-litre engine, despite predictions that most would only be interested in the 1.7-litre models.

In the small panel van sector, VW Transporters and Mercedes-Benz Vitos continue to pull ahead in terms of popularity and price achieved.VW Transporters still rule the roost, and the most sought-after models are 104hp and 130hp engines. Interestingly, the price difference between short- and long-wheelbase models has come down by £300.

The Mercedes-Benz Vito remains the only contender to the Transporter's crown in terms of percentage against new, as with the right specification, it can achieve even higher prices.

The large panel-van sector remains the same as in recent months, with low-mileage models achieving stronger prices. The LDV Maxus, while still to come to the market in volume, is achieving recommended guide prices. Renault Master vans are plentiful and are achieving good prices too.
