Volvo's pilot scheme to help operators save fuel

09 November 2007

Volvo is to roll out a fuel consultancy scheme to UK operators designed to dramatically reduce fuel consumption. The Fuel Management Service (FMS), which is still in its pilot phase, takes advantage of Volvo's Fuelwatch concept - a collective name for products and services that together help customers save fuel. The programme takes between 12 and 36 months, and involves professional assistance from a Volvo consultant on ways to cut fuel consumption, lowering costs and reducing environmental impact.  It includes driver training and advice on getting the most out of its Dynafleet telematics tool.

The first UK haulier to take part in the FMS trial is WH Malcolm, which runs a 500-strong truck fleet, 200 of which are Volvos. "The early results have been very encouraging," says CEO Andrew Malcolm. "We are seeing 7-8% reductions in fuel consumption, but the challenge is to sustain this. We have employed full-time supervisors to turn the figures into reality. They will monitor the results and communicate with drivers and driver trainers." Ultimately FMS schemes could be offered by every Volvo distributor.
