Unite to call for more truck stops next year

14 November 2007

Unite will launch a campaign in the New Year calling for more truck stops to be built. Speaking at Motor Transport's Fleet Management Conference last week, national secretary for transport Ron Webb pledged a "major and high- profile campaign placing truck stop facilities at the top of our agenda. This campaign won't come and go in two minutes. It will start in January and it will end when we are satisfied that much more has been done than what is currently in place," Webb stressed.

Unite  is calling on the government and catering establishments to take responsibility for injecting cash into facilities. It wants every local authority in England and Wales to have a lorry park that includes on-site security, lighting, proper washing and food facilities and segregation of refrigerated and hazardous goods vehicles.

"The government has to end the fiasco of the merry go-round discussions and bureaucracy that lead to nothing," Webb said, adding that support was invited by operators and trade associations. Both the Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association have welcomed the announcement and are interested in meeting with Webb.
