The average loss per truck crime incident was £36,347 during the third quarter of this year. According to Truckpol's quarterly report for July to September, the most valuable load stolen was £1.3m of computer goods taken during a hijack in Warwickshire on 24 September. There were 19 hijacks during the quarter.
Thefts of loads, usually by curtain-slashing, make up 22% of all reports to TruckPol. DC Andy Round says there has also been a noticeable increase in the theft of vehicles from car
transporters, although this is not helped by the fact it is common practice to leave the keys in the cars being transported.
Household goods, electrical goods, alcohol and metal loads were the key targets for thefts during the quarter. "We are concerned about the number of attacks at motorway service areas throughout the UK and are encouraging police to increase patrols in the run up to Christmas," Round says.
