Dutch moves to create ultra-quiet trucks suitable for late night and early morning supermarkets deliveries have led to a positive reaction from local authorities in Doncaster and London. They are considering allowing operators to make deliveries at times currently banned by truck curfews.
To take advantage of the extra delivery slots trucks will need virtually silent fridge units, tail-lifts and roll container wheels, with trailer floors made of noise absorbent material. Sainsbury's is evaluating 40 trailers bought in the Netherlands after looking at the Dutch system which gives shorter journey times, sometime by up to 60%, because deliveries can be made at less congested times.
