France to extend tolls in 2010

27 November 2007

Trips to France could become more expensive from 2010 when the French government plans to extend its system of road tolls. Currently tolls only apply to selected stretches of motorway the introduction of an electronic toll system called TIS PL will enable charges to be collected based on distance travelled.

Tolls will vary depending on a vehicle's specification, including the number of axles, potential payload and pollution level as well as the distance driven.

Don Armour, manager  for fleet information at the Freight Transport Association, says UK operators signing contracts with customers now should make allowances for the potential extra cost of travelling in France. "They should make sure they are not locked into five-year fixed price contracts when something that could cost them more is on the horizon," he warns.
