FBP praised by Nick Elliot of Lafarge

30 November 2007

Nick Elliott, national transport manager for Lafarge Aggregates, is quick to praise the work of Freight Best Practice (FBP). Elliott, who has been involved with FBP for three years, says: "From my and my team's point of view, there's an information bureau there where you can look for ideas." He highlights the net-working capability and case study access of the programme as being of particular value. "It's a source of information tapping into a lot of other people," he says.

Elliott agrees  that FBP has trouble reaching out to small hauliers - particularly those with one or two vehicles, but stresses that this is not a failing of the scheme, but the operators themselves. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink," Elliott says. "I'm constantly looking at ways and means to improve efficiency, and concerns about fuel [costs are] becoming more acute nowadays.

"But small hauliers don't perceive the benefits of what's achievable." One area that Elliott would urge FBP to get involved with is information concerning the latest telematics technology, which he feels "in this day and age we [operators] need to take advantage of".
